Simon Says (October 2002, big hit magazine)
7th Heaven babe David Gallagher gave big hit's Carolyn Stewart a call to talk about Kylie Minogue, The Crocodile Hunter and his life as Simon Camden... big hit: Last time we spoke, you said that you really wanted to come to Australia - but you haven't! DG: Oh yeah. I've always wanted to go to Australia. There's nothing there I don't want to see aside from the giant spiders that I've heard about. But other than that, I mean I've always been interested to go and visit the outback and Sydney and the beaches. I'm not too into the surfing thing, you know. I'm not a great friend of the shark, but I do my best! big hit: What are your favourite things you've heard about Australia? DG: I just went to the movie premiere of "The Crocodile Hunter: Collision Course". The Crocodile Hunter is like...I walk in from work and The Animal Planet is just sitting on, you know. You know how some families just have the soap operas running all day? We got Animal Planet Running all day. It's always kind of on, you know. Everyone just watches it when they can. "The Crocodile Hunter' is one of those things that is always on and I love it. I think it's awesome, you learn so much and it's a lot of fun. big hit: Cool! Did you actually get to meet Steve Irwin at the premiere? DG: The sad thing about premieres is that usually the people in the movies are very much swamped so it's hard to get a hold of them. By being there I got to quietly appreciate the work. I definitely saw the elephant and the giraffe [that were at the premiere]. I went and petted the buffalo and saw the croc and the cheetahs. Oh man, they had tons of animals! The eagle. They had awesome, awesome animals. big hit: What do you think of Australian music? DG: Kyle Minogue. She's the singer, right? Out of my head? Oh, I love that song, it's a great song because I'm big into dancing and clubbing so she's in constant rotation on the club scene. And I love it. It's great dance music. I think she has a new song out. I'm not too familiar with it yet though. I'm not sure what it is. I have to download it actually. I'm going to look at the site tonight. Thanks for reminding me. big hit: You mean "Love at First Sight"? DG: That's right! There you go. I heard it once actually. They played it one time. I think last week so I'll have to check that out again. big hit: How much longer do you think you'll be with "7th Heaven"? DG: Well, for me, it goes on one more year. At the end of this year I'll be going to college. I'm graduating high school. I'm going to be a senior so after this year I'll be in college. I can't do college and work at the same time. big hit: A few of the other cast members are moving on. Do you know which ones are returning? DG: As far as I know, Jessica Biel (Mary) will be returning for three episodes and Barry Watson (Matt) will not be returning. big hit: We were so very sorry to hear that Barry Watson was diagnosed with Hodgkinson's disease, have you heard how he is doing at the moment? DG: Sadly, actually no I have not. And that's mainly because when he departed [the show] I really didn't get any contact. I'm pretty much the most - I don't want to say withdrawn 'cause that's not true. I mean I hang out with everyone on set just as much - but I'm not the cast member who goes out afterwards and hangs out with the cast. I believe in a great working environment with friends and then I also believe in separation of work and personal life, you know what I mean? So, I have my own friends at home that I hang out with daily and then I have my work friends that I hang out with at work. So Jessie and Bev and Mackenzie they hang out on the weekends sometimes. And Barry. Also, make-up and hair crew go out with some of the grips. There's a cast and crew baseball team and all that stuff. But, you know, I've got my own thing going on, my own friends so I see them at work and then my friends...but once work is done I go and do my own thing. big hit: Did Barry tell you he was sick? DG: When I heard about Barry it was actually kind of sad because I heard about it when everyone else did. I wasn't informed ahead of time. I was at a club dancing and this girl walked over to me and she asked if Barry was okay and I didn't know what she was talking about. And at first she said, "Never mind, I guess it's a joke or something." And I was like "Well what are you talking about?" And she said that he had Hodkinson's Disease and I was like "It's gotta be a joke. I don't know, no-one told me," and she was like "OK". Then I came home and my parents were like, "Um, we need to talk to you about Barry". And I was like, "Oh no, does he have Hodgkinson's Disease?" And they said, "How did you know?" "Well, someone just told me." So I've actually been looking for a way to try and get hold of him. I'll probably end up going through the producers and getting a contact number so I can send him my love. big hit: This is the final season for you, I guess the cast are a bit like family now? DG: Yeah. I mean, again, it's like a family that I love but I'll keep in touch, you know what I mean? It isn't going to be a goodbye. I've always been OK with goodbyes, they're not hard for me. I don't know why, they don't affect me that way, because I don't believe in final goodbyes. You know, I think if you really put enough effort into it you can see them again and all that will come around, you know what I mean. It's not really goodbye, because goodbye you talk about being the end of something and this is the end of something but it's the beginning of something, you know? It's going to be the beginning of my career, the beginning of my college life, the beginning of a lot of things that I can concentrate on. big hit: Finally, do you have a message for all your Australian fans? DG: Look out for me because I'm coming soon, goddammit! I'm going to be there eventually and terrorizing your side of the globe. And I can't wait, so hopefully I'll be able to get down there and visit and see the wonderful sites that I hear that you have Down Under and I'll check it out. |
