Interview by Sarah Jenks-Daly (February 2006, Teen Vogue magazine)
David Gallagher could follow the path of least resistance by looking for roles like that of Simon Camden - the character he has played on The WB's 7th Heaven for the past ten years. But instead, the 21-year-old actor (who got his start in Look Who's Talking Now at age eight) made a decision to, as he puts it, "diversify". First, David took two weeks off to travel to Texas to act in The Quiet, an edgy indie film about a deaf orphan sent to live with a foster family. "It was an exercise for me to go out there and tackle something a little different," he says. Then, he produced The Picture of Dorian Gray, an adaptation of the Oscar Wilde story in which he also plays the title role. David hopes the film will change some people's opinions of him. "It's very dark - it's all the things that I've never gotten to do before," he says. "Kind of my response to being stereotyped as a perfect angel." Not that his stint on 7th Heaven restricted him. The show has always worked around his schedule, so he shoots when he is available - allowing him to pursue his film degree at the University of Southern California. "At this point, school is my number-one priority," he says, "but I don't want to lose myself in it for four years either. Film is where I started. It's where my roots are." |
